Immediate Dentures Duluth MN
An immediate denture is a temporary removable denture that is made before the remaining teeth are removed and placed at the time of extraction. This allows you to leave the office with a prosthesis in place while the tissues heal.
Because the denture must be made before the teeth are removed, treatment begins in advance of the extraction appointment. Records are made from your existing teeth and tissues and used to plan and fabricate the temporary denture.
What to Expect After Tooth Removal
An immediate denture is placed over tissues that have just undergone surgery. During the first several days, swelling is expected. As the swelling decreases and healing progresses, the shape of the gums changes and the denture will gradually become looser. This is a normal part of healing rather than an indication that the denture was made incorrectly.
We will monitor your healing and adjust the denture as needed. A soft reline may be placed inside the denture to improve its adaptation to the changing tissues. Most patients require one or two soft relines during the approximately four-month healing period, although individual needs vary.
An Immediate Denture Is a Temporary Prosthesis
An immediate denture serves an important purpose during healing, but it is not the final denture. Because it is made before the teeth are removed, we cannot evaluate its fit in the mouth in the same way we can with a denture made after healing.
Learning to eat and function with a removable denture also takes time. A denture does not function like natural teeth, and movement during eating and speaking can occur. Our team will help you with adjustments, fit, and home-care recommendations throughout the healing period.
Once healing is complete, we will evaluate the tissues and discuss the appropriate next step for your definitive prosthesis.
Because an immediate denture is made before the teeth are removed, the fit and appearance cannot be fully evaluated in the mouth before surgery. The position of the existing teeth, available space, and underlying anatomy may influecence the final tooth position and appearance of the immediate denture. Esthetic compromises may have to be made is some cases to
compensate for inadequate space or structural concerns.

You will receive specific instructions for the first days after your extractions, including when to wear and remove the denture, cleaning, use of denture adhesive, diet, and care of the surgical sites.
