Denture Exams & Maintenance in Duluth, MN

Even without natural teeth, you still need regular dental visits. Oral tissues and supporting bone can change, while dentures and attachment components wear over time. Professional care helps maintain oral health, comfort, and function.¹˒²

At the Dental Implant & Reconstructive Center, Dr. Esguerra,a board-certified prosthodontist, provides personalized care for complete dentures, partial dentures, and removable implant dentures—including those made elsewhere.

Routine Denture Exams, Cleaning & Maintenance

“Recare” is our term for ongoing professional evaluation and maintenance. Dr. Esguerra typically recommends a recare examination once a year, with the schedule personalized to your oral health, prosthesis, and maintenance needs. Cleaning visits may follow a different schedule.

During these visits, we review and evaluate:

  • Medical and dental history: health changes, medications, and recent dental treatment.

  • Oral tissues and supporting bone: tissue health and changes affecting denture support, with X-rays when indicated.

  • Fit and function: stability, bite, comfort, chewing, and speech.

  • Prosthesis condition: wear, cracks, chips, broken or loose teeth, and attachment components.

  • Remaining teeth and implants: their condition and surrounding tissue health, when applicable.

  • Home care: your cleaning routine and personalized guidance.

Oral Cancer Screening

Our recommended care includes an oral cancer screening at least once each year—even without natural teeth. We examine the mouth and surrounding tissues for suspicious changes, including potentially precancerous or cancerous abnormalities. Findings may require further evaluation or a biopsy.³

Do not assume your routine medical examination includes an oral cancer screening. Tell us about persistent sores, lumps, red or white patches, or other changes in your mouth.

Professional Cleaning & Timely Maintenance

Care may include cleaning with our licensed dental hygienist, along with cleaning and polishing your removable denture. Professional stain and tartar removers address deposits that home cleaning may leave behind. Cleaning and specialist recare can occur during the same appointment.

An ill-fitting denture may cause sore spots, chronic irritation, or tissue overgrowth. Dr. Esguerra assesses whether a reline or other maintenance could improve support and comfort and help extend the denture’s useful life.¹

For implant dentures, report changes in how securely the denture “snaps” into place. We evaluate the fit and attachments before replacing inserts, because looseness can have several causes.

Visits for a Specific Concern

For soreness, looseness, damage, or changes in your bite or speech, a problem-focused visit helps determine whether an adjustment, repair, or other treatment is appropriate.
