Dental Implant Surgical Guides
Digital Planning at Dental Implant & Reconstructive Center in Duluth MN
Dental implant treatment begins with understanding both the available anatomy and the planned restoration. For selected cases, Dr. Roxanna J. Esguerra uses three-dimensional CBCT imaging, digital impressions, and implant-planning software—including SimPlant and coDiagnostiX®—to evaluate potential implant positions before surgery.
WHAT IS A SURGICAL GUIDE?
A dental implant surgical guide is a custom device designed from the digital treatment plan. The guide fits securely over the teeth, soft tissue, or other supporting structures and contains precisely positioned openings that help transfer the planned implant position from the computer to the clinical procedure.
RESTORATIVELY DRIVEN IMPLANT PLANNING
Implant position is determined by more than the amount of available bone. The position and angulation of an implant can influence the design, function, esthetics, cleansability, and long-term maintenance of the final restoration.
Digital planning allows Dr. Esguerra to evaluate the proposed restoration together with the patient’s three-dimensional anatomy. When appropriate, a surgical guide can then be designed to help transfer that plan to surgery.
DOES EVERY IMPLANT REQUIRE A SURGICAL GUIDE?
No. Surgical guides are one of several tools available for implant placement and are not necessary or appropriate for every procedure. Dr. Esguerra determines whether guided surgery offers a meaningful clinical advantage based on the individual treatment plan, anatomy, restorative goals, and surgical procedure.
FROM DIGITAL PLAN TO CLINICAL CARE
Depending on the clinical situation, Dr. Esguerra may use SimPlant or coDiagnostiX® to combine three-dimensional imaging with restorative information, virtually plan implant position, and design a surgical guide to help transfer that plan to the clinical procedure.
A surgical guide does not replace clinical judgment. Rather, it is one way of connecting diagnostic imaging, restorative planning, and implant surgery. This integration is particularly valuable when the surgical and restorative phases of implant treatment are planned together.
TECHNOLOGY WITH A PURPOSE
Technology is most valuable when it helps us better understand your individual needs, plan treatment thoughtfully, and communicate those plans clearly with you.
